This Women’s Month, DNE is proud to spotlight the leaders reshaping the global energy landscape. From DNA-inspired solar storage to circular battery recycling and next-generation fusion technology, women are not just participating in the industry, they are driving its evolution.
Below, we highlight three global breakthroughs led or driven by women that are redefining how we generate, store, and sustain power. Because at DNE, we know that smarter energy starts with diverse perspectives.
In February 2026, Grace Han, Associate Professor at University of California, Santa Barbara, and her team published groundbreaking research in the journal Science detailing a revolutionary “liquid battery.”
Inspired by DNA structures, the team developed a molecule called pyrimidone that stores sunlight as chemical energy and releases it as heat on demand, even years later. Known as MOST (Molecular Solar Thermal) technology, this “rechargeable sun battery” achieves an energy density of 1.6 megajoules per kilogram, nearly double that of a standard lithium-ion battery.
This breakthrough challenges the assumption that solar energy must be used immediately or stored conventionally. Instead, it opens the door to long-duration, stable solar storage in liquid form, a potential game changer for industrial heat applications and seasonal storage.
As co-founder and Co-CEO of Cylib, Dr. Lilian Schwich is at the forefront of sustainable electric vehicle production. In January 2026, Cylib successfully produced battery-grade lithium carbonate from end-of-life NMC batteries.
This recycled material has now been qualified for integration into new EV batteries by an international manufacturer, marking a significant step towards a circular economy for electric vehicles. This advancement reduces reliance on new raw material extraction and represents a crucial breakthrough in sustainable battery recycling, paving the way for more environmentally friendly EV manufacturing.
At Tokamak Energy, Itxaso Ariza, as Chief Technology Officer, is spearheading critical advancements in fusion energy. Her leadership has driven breakthroughs in High-Temperature Superconductor (HTS) magnet hardware and ST40 performance.
Notably, in late 2025, the company announced Demo4, a world-first HTS magnet system. These significant milestones are essential steps toward developing viable and efficient fusion energy, holding the promise of a virtually limitless and clean power source for the future.
From long-duration solar storage to battery recycling and fusion-ready magnet systems, these breakthroughs show how innovation is accelerating across the entire energy value chain.
For businesses, this means more than inspiring stories. It signals real progress toward scalable storage, circular supply chains, and next-generation power sources that will shape procurement, risk management, and long-term strategy.
At DNE, we believe smarter energy decisions are driven by diverse leadership and practical innovation. This Women’s Month, we recognize the leaders turning bold ideas into infrastructure that will power a more resilient and sustainable future.
